It is the first city in the Netherlands to use deep geothermal heat for the heating facilities in a residential area. This innovative energy system is helping towards a better environment by reducing CO₂emissions by 70 percent and saving natural gas. We're going underground!

On Monday 1st March 2010 Mrs. Jacqueline Cramer, the ex-Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment, accompanied by Councillor Marnix Norder and representatives from the collaborating parties, announced the official start of the drilling. More than 175 guests and members of the Press were present to take part in the festive opening ceremony.

Advantages for the enviroment

By using this clean source of energy no CO₂ is released and that is a huge advantage for the environment. And that makes a difference. 5,000 metric tons less CO₂ per year will be released, that is the same as the emissions from 2,300 cars. Also we will save 7 million m³ of natural gas per year.
