Geothermal Heat The Hague

Clean and sustainable energy from the earth's surface

Generating safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy for heating our homes. In the Hague, that is possible. It is the first city in the Netherlands to use deep geothermal heat for the heating facilities in a residential area. This innovative energy system is helping towards a better environment by reducing CO2 emissions by 70 percent and saving natural gas. As well as this it ensures that the residents of the houses live more comfortably. But what is geothermal heat exactly and how does it work? You will find the answers on this website.

On Monday 1st March 2010 Mrs. Jacqueline Cramer, the ex-Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment, accompanied by Councillor Marnix Norder and representatives from the collaborating parties, announced the official start of the drilling. More than 175 guests and members of the Press were present to take part in the festive opening ceremony.

Advantages for the enviroment

By using this clean source of energy no CO2 is released and that is a huge advantage for the environment. And that makes a difference. 5,000 metric tons less CO2 per year will be released, that is the same as the emissions from 2,300 cars. Also we will save 7 million m3 of natural gas per year.
